Part Four
Order
HIS POV
If I had never believed in eternity, now I know I do.
Because that was exactly how it felt like waiting for her to return - An eternity.
A cascade of activities that I could otherwise keep myself occupied with lined up my to-do list. But all that was important for me to do was to wait for her.
I had sorted everything out.
You might call me delusional but today I needed to trust in order and routines.
I needed her to come in, at the right time. Say her greetings to the right person, walk to “her seat”, do some “fake-reading”, then convince her to sit at the seat I placed beside me -just for her. And allow spontaneity lead the words we say to each other.
I knew I had to make up for ‘the accident’ that occurred at our last interaction.
Yes, I was trying to make a grand first impression to mark my presence in her mind and thoughts. But frustrate her?
No
Infuriate her?
I would never.
I wanted to make her feel as safe with me as I was with the ocean.
I wanted to give her security, comfort, and peace.
Was I doing too much?
Wanting too much?
Feeling too much?
Was I expecting too much?
No
I just want to make her happy.
Where was that damn book?
It was all going according to plan and when she walked in, all I could see were her eyes.
I couldn’t tell what color her cashmere blouse was or how short her navy blue jorts were. Her eyes were searching for something, yes, they were focused on her destination but slightly distracted until she found her seat.
Until she found me.
Minutes flew by faster than seconds as she (walked) ran over.
I mean I saw her walk but in less than a second, she stood right before me. Yes, I counted.
I tried hard not to show how elated I was to see her but it slipped, one way or another.
And now I remembered that this wasn’t a coincidence.
“I guess we meet again.”
Yes, me again.
Her eyes betrayed her steady gaze at me as I could tell she didn’t see me coming.
Maybe she didn’t like surprises but she had the best reflexes for stunts such as this.
Did she just stay without me convincing her?
Oh, this was fate.
“What are you reading ?”
No, you werent supposed to ask me that. There she goes, throwing my plans away.
“ A book.”
I could feel the slow, hot, and heavy drop of sweat on my temple. I had frantically picked up this book without even checking for its title.
“Then you must either have a disorder or you’re just terrible at pretending…” Ouchh
“…because first, you sit on other people’s seats in the library, which tells me you have zero respect for personal space.”
That’s not true
“Then you walk around - a library with seats- while reading and now, you’re reading a book, upside down. “
She got me. She got me good. But I was better.
“I’m proofreading the gravity edition, we can’t trust these authors, you know?”
Yeah, I had just set myself up to fail. Simply by trusting order.
